Lamp & Sang Offerings
We are pleased to invite anyone interested to request lamp offerings in the Lamp House at Orgyen Chö Dzong. The lamps requested by you will be offered on your behalf and dedicated according to your wishes.
All lamps are made in the specially built Lamp House (to the right in the image below) which stands right next to our Stupa for World Peace on retreat land blessed by His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche.
Why Offer Lamps?
In general, making lamp offerings is a skillful method to accumulate merit and support aspiration prayers for oneself and others.
On a deeper level, offering lamps is a direct way to help connect oneself and others with the light elements of being, and to dispel the darkness of ignorance which is the root of suffering for all beings throughout the universe. We offer these lamps with the intention to relieve both relative and ultimate suffering and obscurations. We offer them with the wish that the light of wisdom takes root – in place of ignorance – in the hearts and minds of all parent sentient beings, until even the subtlest obscurations have been totally obliterated.
Dungse Shenphen Dawa Rinpoche holds that offering lamps is an important practice. Therefore on big dharma days, such as the great wheel turning days and tsok days, we traditionally light lamps making strong aspiration prayers for the benefit of all. Moreover, according to Rinpoche it is an especially important means to help those in the bardo connect with luminosity. When people ask what they should do when someone passes away, he invariably advises them to light lamps of behalf of the deceased.
Moreover, if one has specific obstacles to ones path, lighting lamps is a very practical way to overcome these to clear the way ahead. For all these reasons and more – lighting lamps with prayers and dedicating the merit is an extremely beneficial practice. Sadly, this simple and easy practice is generally overlooked and underrated. Yet, since it is used in all spiritual traditions – this indicates that it is a universally valued method to communicate with the light of wisdom.
